Decoded: When Life After Hysterectomy Stopped Making Sense

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought: “Whose body is this?”

That was Jenifer. After her total hysterectomy, she expected a complete recovery over time. What she didn’t expect was to feel like her body had turned against her. Her hormones felt chaotic. She was in pain every day. She barely slept. Her energy was gone. And no matter how hard she tried, her weight would not budge.

She did everything “right.” She exercised. She ate well. She followed the plans given to her. She stayed disciplined. Yet nothing worked.

Over time, the physical symptoms turned into something deeper and began creeping into her sense of self, affecting her on a deeper psychological level. She felt, shame, self-doubt, and a sense of disconnection. In her words, “I felt completely stuck. Like I didn’t recognize my own body anymore — and no one could tell me why.” She was frustrated with it all and those frustrations weren’t being heard, but she did not know where to turn for the answers and solutions she needed. Then she decided to try a different route and reached out to me.

This is how we figured out where her health problems were coming from and how we worked together so she could get control of the situation and feel like herself again.

The Silent Damage of Being Dismissed

Jenifer was told again and again that everything was normal. Her labs were seen as “fine”, so her symptoms were brushed off. She was told it was the result of stress and mental health, and that it was just the realities of aging as a woman. None of those assumptions were correct.

You’ve probably heard similar things. The reality is, women are being dismissed and gaslit every single day. I hear it constantly. I’ve faced it myself.

We get told the same things:

“You’re just anxious.”

“It’s probably in your head.”

“This is just what happens as you get older.”

No.

Your symptoms are not character flaws. They are not personal failures. And they are not proof that you aren’t trying hard enough.

I’ve been where Jen was. I know what it feels like to work so hard — to track the food, to do the workouts, to follow the rules — and still feel like you’re failing. That quiet shame. That exhaustion. That creeping belief that maybe this is just how it is now. It’s not.

The Crucial First Step: Listening

Before we ordered a single lab, I listened to her story. I validated her experience. I did not blame, dismiss, or minimize her situation. I remained curious and compassionate, because to get to the root of a problem, that is exactly what is required. From the outset I made sure she understood something clearly: that none of this was her fault.

Jenifer wasn’t lazy or undisciplined. She wasn’t doing anything wrong. Her body was simply responding to hidden stressors that no one had taken the time to uncover.

My Functional Medicine Approach: We Test, We Learn, We Connect the Dots

I practice functional medicine because I believe there is always a root cause. Symptoms are signals. They are messages. Clues. But to understand them, we have to look deeper and often go beyond traditional medicine, which has a habit of only showing surface issues in silos. But the body doesn’t work in silos. Every part of it is connected and affects every other part.

After a thorough intake and deep dive into her history, lifestyle, stress patterns, and goals, we ordered functional labs to uncover what standard testing had missed. This included:

These tests provided the necessary context and hidden stressors in her life that helped to reveal the healing opportunities and uncover what her body needed.

Results Came in and the Bigger Picture Emerged

When Jen’s results arrived, we reviewed them in detail together because I want my clients to understand their bodies and have autonomy, not depend on me forever. I wanted her to understand she had a say and control over her health and healing.

While looking through the results, she saw:

  • Why her energy was low
  • Why her weight felt resistant
  • Why her hormones felt chaotic
  • Why her body was struggling to adapt

For the first time since she started experiencing them, her symptoms weren’t random. They were connected and made sense. And that’s the beauty of functional labs – they help you understand the connection, so you can stop blaming yourself and start creating solutions.

In my role as a functional medicine coach, I teach my clients to interpret symptoms as messages, not enemies. It’s important that they understand that your body is not working against you. It’s trying to communicate with you. Sometimes we just need a little help to decode the language it’s using so we can start to speak it.

Co-Creating a Protocol That Actually Fits Real Life

Then came one of my favorite parts: crafting her protocol together.

There are always multiple paths toward healing, and I refuse to hand someone a rigid, overwhelming list of things they have no desire to do. It’s always better to work WITH a person and in tandem with the realities of their lifestyle, rather than against it.

So, rather than provide her with a roadmap that turned her whole world upside down and was completely out of sync with who she is, we:

  • Prioritized what mattered most
  • Chose strategies that resonated with her
  • Built a step-by-step, comprehensive plan
  • Moved in the right order

After she received her protocol, I encouraged her to sit with it, to absorb it. Then we met again to review and refine, because empowerment comes from ownership, and ownership requires understanding.

Accountability Matters (Because I Need It Too)

I’m a functional health practitioner. But I’m also a functional medicine coach. That means I don’t just hand you a plan and disappear. I provide:

  • Guidance
  • Strategy
  • Adjustments
  • Accountability

And I offer accountability because I need accountability too. I also understand that healing isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency, about better done than perfect, and having someone in your corner when motivation dips.

What Changed for Jenifer

The changes didn’t happen overnight, but they did happen steadily. Over time:

  • Her sleep improved
  • Her daily discomfort decreased
  • Her energy stabilized

Jenifer was able to build sustainable habits that actually felt good. And the weight that had felt immovable? It started to be released. In fact, she lost a tremendous amount of weight. But more importantly, she lost the shame, the self-blame, and the feeling of being trapped in her own body.

She told me: “Working with Kate helped me feel healthy, empowered, and back in control of my body.”

That’s the real transformation. Not just the number on the scale, but confidence restored, trust rebuilt, and power reclaimed.

If You See Yourself in Jen’s Story…

If you’ve been told everything looks “normal”, if you feel dismissed and misunderstood, if you’re exhausted from trying so hard and getting nowhere…please hear this:

You are not broken. You are not failing. And this is not “just in your head.”

On the contrary. Your body is speaking. You may simply need someone to listen closely enough to decode the message. And when you do? You’ll find the clarity you need to fix the underlying issues and get back on the road to better health.

If you’re stuck in the cycle of pain, fatigue, and weight that won’t move, reach out to me and let’s set up a call. Your well-being matters, and you deserve more than just band-aids. You deserve real answers and real solutions.
